Devon Sawa spent years trying not to talk about Casper, he told People in an interview reported by Deadline.

Now he embraces it. The actor said the role is what got him to where he is.

The interview was published on October 10, when Sawa was 48, according to TV Insider. He spoke openly about struggling to accept the fandom that came with playing one of the most recognisable screen ghosts of the 1990s.

Sawa starred as Casper in human form opposite Christina Ricci in the 1995 film Casper, according to Deadline. He was a teenage heart-throb at the time. The attention stuck.

He said there was a time he did not want to discuss the part at all. That has changed.

He still hears the famous line. Sawa told People he will always have to say “Can I keep you?” to somebody, no matter what project he is promoting, according to Deadline. It follows him everywhere. He seems at peace with that.

His current job is very different. Sawa plays Mr. Peter Cole, a warlock teacher, in Coven Academy, according to Deadline. The show airs on Freeform and streams on Disney+. It co-stars Tiffani Thiessen, Malina Weissman and Malachi Barton.

Sawa also discussed Coven Academy with Lauren Scala on New York Live on September 24, 2026, according to NBC New York. The series was set to stream on Disney+ starting October 2nd.

For fans, this means no awkward pause when Casper comes up. Sawa is happy to revisit the ghost. He just has a new classroom to run as well.
