Dani Carvajal joins Getafe after 23 years at Real Madrid

Dani Carvajal has joined Getafe on a free transfer after 23 years at Real Madrid.
The Madrid-born right-back, 34, had been without a club since his Madrid contract expired in June. He has signed a deal until June next year, according to BBC Sport.
Carvajal is a defender who made the right flank his own. He came through at Real and stayed for more than two decades. That run brought 27 titles, including six Champions Leagues, Europe's top club competition.
The last two years were brutal for him. He tore his cruciate ligament, the key band that steadies the knee, in October 2024. He then suffered another serious knee injury a year later. He played his final season at Madrid after Trent Alexander-Arnold arrived last summer to strengthen the same position.
Getafe are a different world from the Bernabeu. The club are based in the south of Spain's capital city. They sat 11th in La Liga, Spain's top flight, at the time of the announcement.
Carvajal also brings real international pedigree. He made 51 appearances for Spain. He was part of the squads that won the Nations League in 2023 and the European Championship in 2024.
What makes this stand out is the distance travelled. Few players spend 23 years at one club. Fewer still start again at 34, after two major knee injuries, with a mid-table neighbour.
For fans, this means something simple. A Madrid captain in Getafe blue. Ninety minutes will tell how much his legs have left, but the welcome will be loud.
