Z Nation is coming back from the dead.

The Asylum is reviving its zombie drama with Z Nation: Resurrection, a reboot sequel set in the same world as the original series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A reboot sequel means a fresh story with new lead characters, but one that keeps the history of what came before.

The new series is set several years after the events of Z Nation. It centres on a new generation of survivors. They face a new undead threat to the world's remaining human population.

Four familiar faces may be back. Kellita Smith is in talks to return as Roberta Warren, Keith Allan as Murphy, Russell Hodgkinson as Doc and DJ Qualls as Citizen Z. Each is lined up for a supporting role, meaning they would back up a new central cast rather than lead the show.

In talks means a deal is being discussed but has not closed. Nothing is final until contracts are signed, so the returns are not yet confirmed.

The original Z Nation ran for five seasons and 68 episodes on SYFY from 2014 to 2018. That run later spawned Black Summer, a prequel series which aired for two seasons on Netflix between 2019 and 2021.

The new chapter is planned as a 10-episode first season. It comes from The Asylum in partnership with Vital Signs Entertainment, a company founded by former SYFY executive Thomas P. Vitale. David Michael Latt, Paul Bales, David Rimawi and Vitale are attached as executive producers, the senior team in charge of a show creatively and financially.

There is no broadcaster or streamer attached yet. The Asylum is shopping the project to international buyers at Mipcom, the television market in Cannes where channels, platforms and distributors pick up new series. That sales process will decide where viewers can eventually watch it and when production can move forward.

For fans, this structure offers a clear way in. Newcomers get a new cast and a new threat to follow from scratch. Longtime viewers get the chance to see what became of Warren, Murphy, Doc and Citizen Z years down the line.
