Haley Lu Richardson has joined the cast of Universal Pictures' Miami Vice '85, Deadline reported in its own exclusive on 13 October 2026.

It is the latest addition to a large-scale revival of the television crime drama. The film centres on two Miami detectives working undercover. Richardson's part has not been detailed in the verified casting report.

She joins Austin Butler as Detective James "Sonny" Crockett and Michael B. Jordan as Detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, according to the same Deadline report. Crockett and Tubbs were the central partnership in the original series. Butler and Jordan take on those two roles here.

Joseph Kosinski directs the film from a script by Dan Gilroy, Deadline reported. Kosinski is the film-maker behind large theatrical action productions. Gilroy is the writer handling the screenplay.

The production is filmed for Imax, according to Deadline. That means it is shot to fill the extra-tall screens found in Imax cinemas. The format is usually reserved for films built around spectacle and location work.

Miami Vice '85 is based on the crime drama series created by Anthony Yerkovich for Universal Television, Deadline reported. The story draws in particular on the pilot episode, titled "Brother's Keeper". A pilot is the first episode made to launch a series.

Universal has dated the film for theatrical release on 19 May 2028, according to Deadline. Theatrical means cinemas first, before any home or streaming availability. The May date places it at the start of the summer season in the United States and Canada, known in the trade as domestic.

What makes this stand out is the shape of the package. A known title. Two leads cast as a famous pairing. A director associated with big-screen scale. Now a third named cast member is in place well ahead of cameras rolling and a release almost two years away.
