HBO brings back Girls for five episodes with original cast

HBO has ordered five new episodes of Girls, bringing Lena Dunham's comedy back almost a decade after it ended.
The order is for a limited run, meaning a short season with a set ending. Production will begin in 2027, according to Deadline.
Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath. She is joined by Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro and Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz.
Not everyone is confirmed to return. Adam Driver, who played Hannah's boyfriend Adam, is not confirmed for the revival. Jenni Konner, who was co-showrunner on the original series, is not returning.
Behind the camera, Dunham will executive produce alongside Judd Apatow, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Apatow returns on behalf of Apatow Productions, while Landress and Cohen are affiliated with Dunham's Good Thing Going banner, according to Variety. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers.
The original Girls aired on HBO from 2012 to 2017 and ran for six seasons. Dunham was its creator, showrunner and star. The series earned 19 Emmy nominations and two wins.
For viewers, this means a brief return rather than a full new series. Five episodes. Same central group. A closed story.
The revival follows months of public discussion about a return. Dunham has said she had an idea for a Girls movie and discussed it on SiriusXM's Radio Andy. She also organised a group chat with the original cast. Dunham has since launched a new show titled Too Much.
