Paddington The Musical to Open in Sydney in September 2027

Paddington The Musical is on its way to Australia. It will open at Sydney's Capitol Theatre in September 2027.
That run will be the show's Australian premiere, meaning its first full staging in the country. A ticket waitlist is already open for the Sydney dates, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Casting is still to be announced.
The Sydney production is presented by Sonia Friedman Productions, StudioCanal, Eliza Lumley Productions on behalf of Universal Music UK and Suzanne Jones, according to WhatsOnStage.
The musical began life in London. It made its West End debut at the Savoy Theatre in 2025. It is still running there, with booking currently extended until February 2028.
It arrives in Sydney with major awards behind it. The production won seven Olivier Awards in 2026, including Best New Musical. The Oliviers are London's leading theatre prizes, run by the Society of London Theatre. The show also received nine WhatsOnStage Awards, which are voted for by theatregoers.
The story starts on the page. The musical is based on Michael Bond's book A Bear Called Paddington, about a young bear who travels from Peru to London. The stage version is also inspired by the recent Paddington films.
The spoken script and story, known in theatre as the book, is by Jessica Swale. Music and lyrics are by Tom Fletcher. The production is directed by Luke Sheppard.
Sydney will follow New York in the show's international rollout. Producers plan to open the musical on Broadway in April 2027. It will play the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, with performances starting on 30 March 2027 and an opening night set for 18 April 2027, according to Playbill.
Audiences who cannot get to London, New York or Sydney can still hear the score. The original cast recording was produced by Matt Brind and released on Decca Records.
What makes this stand out is the speed of the journey. A West End opening in 2025, Broadway in spring 2027, then Sydney that September. That is a quick move from a home premiere to two major overseas openings.
For families, this means no long-haul flight is needed to see the bear on stage. Marmalade sandwiches, it seems, travel well.
