Grand Theft Auto VI has scraped into The Game Awards 2026 by a single day.

Rockstar Games lists the release date as 19 November 2026. The awards eligibility cut-off, the last date a game can be on sale and still be considered, is 20 November 2026. That leaves 24 hours to spare.

The rule requires games to be commercially available to customers on or before 9pm PT on Friday, 20 November 2026, according to Eurogamer. Hit that deadline and a game can be judged. Miss it and it waits another year. This year's ceremony takes place on 10 December 2026.

Rockstar announced the 19 November date after moving the game from its previous release date of 26 May 2026, according to Rockstar Games. The new date was the production fact, with no extra explanation beyond the extra time. The game is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the current PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Rockstar describes it as a single-player experience, a story played solo rather than online with others.

The Game Awards 2026 will be held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, according to The Game Awards. Nominees are coming in mid-November 2026. That puts the announcement within days of the cut-off. Public tickets go on sale on 29 October.

Last year's show delivered 171 million livestreams, a measure of how large the audience has become. The awards mix winners with new trailers and release-date reveals, which is why the December date matters to publishers.

For fans, this means the timetable is unusually tight. Voters will have only about three weeks between the release of Grand Theft Auto VI and the ceremony. Eligibility opens the door. It does not guarantee a nomination.
