Pinault to give Venice palace a permanent collection display

French collector François Pinault plans to keep his art on permanent view in Venice for the first time.
The permanent hang, a display that stays up long-term instead of changing every few months, is planned for Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the Grand Canal palace that acts as one of his exhibition spaces in the city. The plan was reported by ARTnews on 15 October 2026.
Palazzo Grassi will become the home of the permanent exhibition from March 2027. The Pinault Collection, the organisation that runs Pinault's museums, lists the opening for 21 March 2027 Pinault Collection. The date puts the launch in the spring, ahead of the busy summer period in the lagoon city.
The show will bring together more than 100 major works from the collection in one place. That scale matters for a casual visit. It allows a walk-through survey in a single afternoon, without needing to time a trip to catch a short-run temporary show. It also gives first-time visitors a reliable introduction to what the collection holds.
It is a shift in how the building is used. Since opening to the public in its current role in 2006, Palazzo Grassi has hosted 27 exhibitions, all temporary by design. A permanent display ends that run of complete changeovers, when the rooms were emptied and rehung for each new project.
The change does not happen at once. The collection says its 2026 programme looks at how artists reveal, transform and disrupt the way people perceive the world. That is curator shorthand for art that plays with seeing, from altered images to unexpected materials and arrangements. The theme links several shows rather than a single exhibition.
Within that season, the collection lists a major exhibition devoted to American artist Lorna Simpson at Punta della Dogana in Venice, the former customs house at the tip of the city that serves as Pinault's second museum there. The calendar entry gives the date as 29 March 2026 Palazzo Grassi Calendar. The two Venetian sites have long worked as a pair, with shows staged across the palace and the customs house.
For visitors, this means a simple promise. From spring 2027, there will always be a Pinault display to see in Venice, whatever else is on tour. Regulars will know what to expect. Newcomers will have somewhere to start.
