Denis Villeneuve says his James Bond film will be the "very powerful rocket" to pull him away from Arrakis after Dune. The director made the comment in an interview with Empire reported by Variety on Oct. 15, 2026. Arrakis is the desert planet at the centre of his Dune films.

He needed an escape route. Villeneuve said that when he was asked to direct the next Bond film, his answer was simple: "OK, this is what I need," according to Variety. The job gives him a clean break from science fiction. It points him toward spies, gadgets and London.

His third Dune film comes first. Dune: Part Three is scheduled to debut on Dec. 18, 2026, according to Variety. The film is based on Frank Herbert's novel Dune Messiah. It charts Paul Atreides as he falls from prophetic liberator to tyrannical emperor.

The interview appeared as an Empire exclusive titled "Dune: Part Three Is 'A Very Different Movie' To The First Two," published on Oct. 15, 2026, per Empire. Villeneuve said the world of the story has changed. The new film leaves the hero's journey behind.

He told Empire he returned for a third and final chapter to be "severe with the material" and not complacent, as reported by Variety. He wants audiences to realise how much Paul's behaviour has hardened. The approach is stricter. The focus is narrower.

Villeneuve was revealed in June 2025 as the director of the next James Bond movie, according to Variety. That film will be the first 007 outing at Amazon, as noted by Empire in June 2025. The studio change adds attention to his appointment.

For fans, this means a clear order of events. Dune closes in theatres in December. Bond comes next. Villeneuve is treating one as the farewell and the other as the launch.
