Crystal Lake flips the legend as Grace, not Pam, strikes first

The first kill in Crystal Lake does not come from the killer horror fans expect.
Peacock's Friday the 13th prequel series, meaning a story set before the original films, is now available to stream. The eight-episode series premiered on 15 October 2026 exclusively on Peacock, according to the streamer, and comes from Brad Caleb Kane as well as Peacock and A24 Peacock. It centres on Pam Voorhees Peacock.
Linda Cardellini plays Pam. Callum Vinson plays her young son, Jason Voorhees. Gwendolyn Sundstrom plays Grace, Jason's childhood friend Deadline.
The opening sets up the tragedy in plain terms. Grace throws a bully's ball into the lake after the bully teases Jason. Jason drowns trying to fetch it. At the time, counsellors Claudette and Barry, played by Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik, have slipped away together.
That drowning is the incident first mentioned in the original 1980 Friday the 13th film. The series replays it, then follows its fallout. Grace mourns Jason through flashbacks that show their friendship. Pam, grieving her son, takes a maternal and protective interest in Grace.
Grace has a neglectful mother. Pam notices. Pam also attends a self-help summit as she tries to cope with her loss.
Then comes the turn. Claudette and Barry are killed in a first-person sequence, where the camera shows what the attacker sees. The killer is revealed as Grace, not Pam.
Sundstrom was 13 years old when the series filmed in New Jersey. She said Grace has been her favourite character to play so far. She also said she learned a lot from working with Cardellini.
What makes this stand out for viewers is the swap. Many will arrive expecting Pam to strike first. The series gives that act to a grieving child instead, and leaves Pam to respond to it.
