Europe's Summer on Fire: Why 2026 Looks Worse Than Record 2025

The scale
Wildfires have burned 28,000 hectares in France and 50,000 hectares in Spain as of 1 July 2026—more than double the seasonal average for both countries, according to The Guardian. This month alone, southwestern France evacuated 10,000 people from a blaze that scorched 4,600 hectares and injured 16, including four firefighters, Reuters reported. In Portugal, more than 1,200 firefighters backed by 400 support personnel fought a fire that burned 12,000 hectares across a single blaze, per AP News. Spain's Cantabria region has suffered the heaviest losses as the country enters its peak fire season, Euronews reported.
The Connexion France noted that more significant fires have already burned in 2026 than across all of 2025—itself the worst fire season on record for the EU, according to Copernicus satellite data.
Why the heat is especially dangerous
Two overlapping heatwaves in late May and late June drove most of the fire activity. Attribution scientists—researchers who quantify how much climate change shifts the odds of extreme weather—concluded that record June temperatures across Europe would have been "virtually impossible" without fossil fuel warming, per Guardian analysis. Daytime highs during this event were ten times more likely than two decades ago; nighttime lows, a hundred times more likely.
That nighttime detail matters because heat. Normally, vegetation and soil recover overnight, which historically limited fire spread and kept firefighters from exhaustion. When overnight temperatures stay elevated, that recovery window closes.
The wet-then-dry trap
What makes this season unusual is not heat alone but the pattern that preceded it. The Iberian Peninsula—Spain and Portugal—experienced an exceptionally wet winter with high river flows. Copernicus data cited by The Guardian show soil moisture in Spain running above normal from March through May. That initial moisture actually suppressed fire risk by keeping vegetation water-rich and encouraging fuel growth.
Then came the June heatwaves. The water content in that vegetation evaporated rapidly, leaving behind an oversupply of dry fuel primed to burn. Julia Miller, a climate scientist at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research and lead author of a study in Nature Communications Earth & Environment, documented this wet-spring-to-hot-summer sequence as a factor behind Spain's record 2025 fire season. That pattern is repeating in 2026.
Where 2025 set the bar
Last year's fire season shattered expectations. Copernicus's Emergency Management Service recorded 1,079,538 hectares burned across 25 EU member states—the most severe season on record for the bloc. Europe as a whole burned 1,034,552 hectares, exceeding the previous continental record of roughly 988,524 hectares from 2017, per Copernicus's climate service. Spain and Portugal alone lost more than 640,000 hectares, with eight deaths and over 35,000 evacuations, AP reported.
By mid-August 2025, the Eurozone had recorded nearly 440,000 hectares burned—double the seasonal average—following an early-season surge of 1,118 fires detected by 8 July compared with 716 a year earlier, Reuters tallied. Spain had deployed 500 additional troops to fire lines by that point.
The north-south divide
Northern and southern Europe face different fire regimes. EFFIS, the European Forest Fire Information System that tracks fires above 30 hectares, recorded just 32 hectares burned in Finland in 2026 against a 2006–2025 average of 198 hectares. Northern Europe's fires remain constrained by fuel moisture and forest type in ways the Mediterranean climate zone is not. That asymmetry is why headlines concentrate on Iberia and southern France even as continental data get compiled continent-wide.
The adaptation question
The real question, as The Guardian framed it, is not whether Europe is burning but whether infrastructure, land management, and emergency response can keep pace with a new climate regime that produces wet-then-hot sequences as routine rather than anomaly. Whether policy responds likely depends less on any single season's figures than on whether 2026 confirms 2025 as a new baseline.
That shift may already be visible. Tour de France organizers banned spectators from a stage finale because of fire risk, AP reported—a small detail that signals fire danger is now routinely factored into ordinary summer planning across the region.
