One mistake sends you back to the beginning. Reddit user Lost-Equivalent2352 has reported finishing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign on YOLO difficulty in 20 hours, a mode that allows a single life for the entire story, according to Eurogamer.

YOLO, short for "you only live once", is the top difficulty tier introduced in Modern Warfare 4. Die once and the run ends. There is no mission select, so the campaign must be played straight through from the opening cutscene to the end.

It is not open from the start. Players must first finish the whole campaign on Realism difficulty to unlock YOLO. Then any game-over screen stops the run, including accidentally hitting a civilian, missing a jump or losing a chase.

The timing matters. The campaign is currently playable in Early Access, which runs until the official launch of Modern Warfare 4 on 23 October 2026, according to Call of Duty. The full release, including traditional multiplayer, arrives on that date for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2.

The reward is small for the effort. Finishing on YOLO earns a Calling Card, a small image displayed on a multiplayer profile.

Lost-Equivalent2352 said patience did most of the work. The approach relied on hiding, letting AI-controlled teammates do much of the shooting, and heavy use of flashbangs and grenades. The run was played with mouse and keyboard, with the player suggesting that long-range recoil control would make completion with a controller impossible.

Two sections caused the most trouble. Hand-to-hand combat, where only fists can be used, was among the hardest because a single missed counter can end the run. A nighttime mission depicting a North Korean invasion of South Korea was also brutal, since civilians and allies on the battlefield limited grenade use. That one, the player said, was beaten by "pure luck".

What makes this stand out is the maths. Twenty hours without a single fatal error, across firefights, stealth, chases and fist fights. For other players, this means the hardest badge in this year's Call of Duty already has a benchmark.
