GTA 6 preorders run 148% ahead of Modern Warfare 2 in US digital sales

Grand Theft Auto VI preorders are running 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022) in the United States.
That lead covers digital copies only, measured over a comparable period before release, according to Sensor Tower data reported by GameSpot. The game has a launch date of 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A preorder here means a copy paid for, or reserved, before launch day.
The gap matters because of who GTA 6 is being measured against. Sensor Tower compared it with four other large launches: Modern Warfare 2, Diablo 4 (2023), Hogwarts Legacy (2023) and Marvel's Spider-Man (2023). Among those titles, Modern Warfare 2 had the biggest US digital preorder total. GTA 6 has moved well past that pace.
The early sales are already large in their own right. Sensor Tower puts GTA 6 preorder sales at more than 6.45 million copies so far, worth more than US$630 million in revenue. That is the estimate from its sales tracker, which records copies sold and money taken before release. As of 20 October 2026, with a month still to go, those are advance sales only.
The platform split favours one console by a wide margin. About 74% of preorders so far are on PS5, compared with 26% on Xbox Series X|S, according to Sensor Tower data. That is simply where buyers have placed their early orders. It does not include PC or any other version, because none has been announced in the data provided.
There is an important limit to the headline comparison. The 148% figure is for the US and for digital games only. It does not count discs sold in shops, and it does not cover the rest of the world. Buying behaviour often differs by country, and physical sales can change the full picture once launch-week figures arrive.
More buying is expected late. Sensor Tower expects the bulk of preorders to come in the final week before launch, which is a common pattern for big releases. Many players wait until reviews, trailers and word of mouth settle before they commit. The firm projected total prepurchases could reach 25 million.
The figures sit on Sensor Tower's GTA 6 Sales Tracker, a public page that estimates preorders, copies sold and revenue worldwide, as listed on Sensor Tower. The page also compares PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S sales and includes digital advertising data for the game. The worldwide tracker is broader than the US-only preorder comparison. The data was also written up in detail by GamesIndustry.biz.
What makes this stand out is the timing. The previous high mark has been passed with the busiest buying period still ahead. If the last-week surge arrives as expected, the final preorder total will finish well above where it stands now.
