Mayor of Kingstown will end with its fifth and final season, premiering on 15 January 2027. The Paramount+ crime drama starring Jeremy Renner will close with eight episodes instead of its usual ten. The Hollywood Reporter reported the date, the final-season confirmation and the shorter episode count.

A first-look photo from Season 5 has been released, giving viewers an early official still from the closing run. Filming was finalised on 30 June, which puts about six months between the end of shooting and the return to screens. That gap is normal. It leaves time for editing, sound, music and all the finishing work audiences never see.

Renner returns as Mike McLusky, the central figure in the story of a prison town and the power around it. Paramount+ includes his return in its Season 5 preview. He has led the cast from the start, and the last season keeps him front and centre.

Behind the camera, the series was co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon. It is produced by Paramount Television Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions. In television terms, that line-up spreads the work between a major studio, an independent production partner and the creators' own company.

The road to this farewell has moved quickly. Paramount+ ordered a fourth season in December 2024, according to Deadline. That run wrapped on 28 December, ending with Mike chasing escaped prisoner Merle Callahan, according to Entertainment Weekly. The chase closed the season on unfinished business, which the renewal then carried forward.

The fifth-season renewal came on the heels of that finale, meaning it was announced soon after Season 4 finished, according to Deadline. The show previously streamed exclusively on Paramount+ and will also become available on Netflix under a licensing deal, meaning a programme made for one service can play on another after its first window, according to Deadline. That agreement also includes SEAL Team and Watson.

Ten episodes has been the norm for the show. Eight makes the farewell shorter and tighter. It is a common pattern for a final season. Fewer hours to close the story.

For fans, this means a definite ending is now dated. Eight episodes and one last run. There is nothing left on the bubble, meaning a renewal still undecided. The story gets finished.
