Peru's richest 1 percent captured 42 percent of all new wealth generated in the country between 2019 and 2025, according to an Oxfam analysis. The poorest half of Peruvians received 1.4 percent of that new wealth over the same period. Al Jazeera

Oxfam said the concentration of new wealth increased from the previous two decades. Between 2000 and 2019, the top 1 percent captured about 39 percent of all new wealth, compared with 42 percent between 2019 and 2025.

The figures were published on October 20, 2026, alongside a report on public attitudes toward inequality produced with the Institute for Peruvian Studies. Oxfam in Peru, whose executive director is Alejandra Alayza, announced the findings in a press release. Oxfam

In that survey, 84 percent of Peruvians said they believed the country is governed by powerful interests that shape politics to their benefit. More than 75 percent said wealthy corporations and individuals avoid paying their fair share of taxes.

About 70 percent of respondents said they want the government to do more to reduce inequality.

Peru has been governed by nine presidents in the last 10 years. Oxfam did not in the reported findings link the turnover in leadership to a specific cause of the wealth figures.
