Minnie Driver Stars as a Hostage Negotiator in Paramount+ Drama The Day

Minnie Driver plays a hostage negotiator in The Day, an eight-part British drama for Paramount+. Deadline published an exclusive first look at the series and her role on 22 October 2026.
The show takes place over one day. Police run into a bank robbery halfway through a heist. The criminals barricade themselves inside with hostages, and the rest of the series follows the standoff.
Driver plays DI Sylvia "Vox" Voxley, a detective inspector. Luca Pasqualino plays Luke, Louisa Harland plays Freya Hartley and Charlie de Melo plays Liam Marcus. Harland was named an IFTA Rising Star earlier this year, a prize from the Irish Film and Television Academy for emerging talent. IFTN reported that honour in April.
The structure changes from episode to episode. Each one starts with the police, then rewinds to the robbers and the hostages. Each episode shifts the point of view, so the audience sees the same day from different sides of the door.
The series is based on De Dag, a Belgian series first broadcast in 2018 and created by Jonas Geirnaert and Julie Mahieu. The English-language version is written by Ben Harris and Jesse O'Mahoney. Dynamic Television and Clapperboard Studios co-produced and developed it. Mike Benson and Andy Morgan executive produce for Clapperboard, and Daniel March and Tamryn Reinecke do the same for Dynamic. An executive producer is a senior figure who oversees a show's money and creative direction. Jake Rollins is the producer. Andy Tohill and Ryan Tohill will co-direct.
Paramount announced the project in April 2026. Sebastian Cardwell and Paul Testar ordered The Day for Paramount+ in the UK and Ireland. An order is the formal go-ahead from a broadcaster or streamer to make a series. Paramount+ will show the series in every territory where the service operates, apart from Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
Hello Magazine has described the show as an eight-part heist thriller, a crime story built around a robbery. Its episode structure means the tension comes from the standoff rather than the getaway. For viewers, the practical news is simple: the series is coming to Paramount+ across most of its markets.
