Christina Aguilera made a surprise appearance at a Chappell Roan concert in Los Angeles on Oct. 21, joining her on stage midway through the set.

The show was part of the Super Graphic Spectacular, held at the Shrine Auditorium. Billboard reported that Aguilera performed her 2002 hit "Beautiful" while Roan watched from the side of the stage. The two then sang a duet of Roan's track "Coffee."

Aguilera told the crowd that "Coffee" is one of her favourite Roan songs. She also said that from the moment she heard Roan's voice, she knew Roan was a force to be reckoned with.

Roan's first-night set also included a performance of "Expectations," a song by Olivia Rodrigo. Five acts opened the night before her: Lola Young, Tinashe, Amanda Lepore, Blaine Petrovia and Kyra Jeté.

The Super Graphic Spectacular runs for two nights. The second night, Oct. 22, has Roan headlining again. The listed openers are Caroline Polachek, MUNA, Alisa Mae, Fantasia Royale Gaga and Sweaty Eddie.

All proceeds from the concerts will go to Roan's Midwest Princess Project, according to the same report. The project has raised more than $800,000 so far for more than 60 organisations that support trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities. That makes the two nights a fundraiser as well as a pair of concerts, and the money raised goes to the charities rather than to the artist.

Guest appearances like this one often happen with little warning, and a duet on a fundraising bill can be a way of drawing a crowd to a cause. For the people in the room on Oct. 21, the surprise was the headline. For the organisations on the other end of the donations, the figures will matter more over time.
