Investigation Discovery has acquired the true-crime documentary My Brother's Killer, and the film will debut on the channel on December 3. "Acquired" means the network has bought the rights to show it, according to Deadline.

The film was directed by Rachel Mason. It looks into the murder of Billy Newton, who was found murdered on October 29, 1990. It was produced by FutureClown Productions and executive produced by Penelope Spheeris. An executive producer is a senior credit, usually linked to funding and overall oversight of a project.

The documentary has already travelled the festival circuit. It premiered at SXSW, the film and music festival held in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. It later won the Best Documentary Jury Award at the Outshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival. A jury award is a prize chosen by a panel of judges, not by the audience.

Before it reaches Investigation Discovery's screens, the film is set to screen at AFI Fest on October 24. AFI Fest is a Los Angeles festival run by the American Film Institute, and it is often a stop for films looking for a wider audience.

Investigation Discovery is a US channel devoted to true-crime programmes, and it is led by president Jason Sarlanis. Its December 3 date gives viewers a clear start point for a film that has spent the year on the festival circuit. Anyone who wants to see it will need to watch the channel on that date.
