Wolverine Takes September's Top Spot in US Sales as PS5 Climbs

Marvel's Wolverine was the best-selling game in the United States in September, according to Circana, the market research firm that tracks retail and digital game sales.
Its launch month also produced the highest dollar sales for a Sony-published game since Helldivers II in February 2024. Dollar sales show how much customers spent, while unit sales count the copies sold. Wolverine is a single-player game, meaning it is played alone rather than with other people online.
The PlayStation 5 had a strong month in the US. Dollar sales for the console rose 43% compared with September 2025, and unit sales rose 22%. Across all video game hardware, which covers consoles and other gaming devices, unit sales fell 3% year-on-year.
The picture was different for the other platforms. Xbox Series dollar sales fell 2%, while unit sales fell 27%. Nintendo Switch 2 dollar sales dropped 12%, and unit sales fell 14%.
Software followed a busy release calendar. Eight of the top ten best-selling games in the US in September were new releases. Over the year so far, NBA 2K27 has moved ahead of Resident Evil: Requiem to become the best-selling game of 2026 in the US.
Outside the US, Ampere data cited by the same report puts Wolverine at around 2.16 million units sold worldwide in September. That makes it the second-best-selling PS5 game globally that month, behind EA Sports FC 27.
Earlier in the month, Push Square reported that Wolverine was the only single-player title in the top ten of Circana's US PS5 engagement tracker. That tracker ranks how much time players spend in each game. Most of the other entries on that list were live-service games, meaning titles sold and updated in seasons after launch rather than finished in a single package.
Circana's monthly figures are a snapshot of US sales. Still, the September numbers show a PlayStation 5 market that grew in both dollars and units while the wider hardware market shrank. Next month's tracker will show whether that pattern holds.
