John Mayer Signs With Mercury Records and Launches Sob Rock Records

John Mayer has signed a record deal with Mercury Records, and he has launched a label of his own, Sob Rock Records, in partnership with the company. Mercury Records Chairman and CEO Tyler Arnold signed him, according to Billboard, which reported the news on 22 October 2026.
The deal marks a change of label for the singer and guitarist. Sob Rock, the 2021 album that shares its name with the new label, was his last release for Columbia Records. In 2022, Mayer announced that he had decided not to renew his recording agreement with Columbia.
That 2021 album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, the main US chart that ranks albums by sales and streaming. A peak is the highest position a song or album reaches on a chart, so No. 2 is the best spot it hit.
His next release is a single called "Tom and Jerry." It is set for release on 23 October 2026, and it is his first solo release since Sob Rock.
Partnerships like this one are a familiar route for established artists. The artist gets a label name of their own, while a larger company provides the money, staff and distribution that are hard to run alone. Mercury, part of the Universal Music Group, has a long history of working with established names.
For fans, the practical news is the date. The single arrives on 23 October, and the label that will release what comes next now has Mayer's name on its roster.
