Magnitude 7 Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Killing 16

A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Tibet in southwestern China at 10:33 p.m. local time on October 22, 2026, or 1433 GMT. According to Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency, citing the emergency management bureau of Nagqu City, 16 people were killed and 32 were injured.
Of the injured, 11 were in serious condition and 21 had minor injuries, the same report said.
Emergency management bureaus are the local government offices responsible for disaster response and rescue.
Tibet has been hit by a deadly earthquake before. A magnitude 7.1 quake in January 2025 was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey, the American agency that monitors seismic activity. Reuters reported at least 126 people killed and 188 injured in that event.
The October 2026 quake is the latest in a region where earthquakes occur with some regularity.
