Production has started on a new feature film based on La Regenta, the Spanish novel by Clarín, with Netflix behind it. Variety reported that the film went into production on October 23, 2026.

Netflix describes the project as a contemporary version of the classic. It reinterprets the story from a fresh female perspective, moving the tale of a provincial Spanish town into the present day. Ester Expósito and Mar Coll are part of the project, and Mar Coll is also one of the three writers, alongside Anna R. Costa and Diego Vega. The film is produced by María Zamora at Elastica Films.

Clarín is the pen name of the Spanish writer Leopoldo Alas y Ureña. La Regenta was published in two volumes in the mid-1880s and is set in a fictional city called Vetusta. It follows Ana Ozores, the wife of a former magistrate, and the people who surround her, and it has long been taught in Spanish schools.

The cast brings together familiar names from Spanish film and television. Oriol Pla plays Magistral Fermín de Pas, the cathedral canon whose attention to Ana drives much of the novel's tension. Vito Sanz plays Víctor Quintanar, and Borja Luna plays Álvaro Mesía.

Several roles are also set. Ana Torrent plays Doña Paula, Itsaso Arana plays Visitación, and Clara Ingold plays Petra. Gonzalo de Castro is cast as Ripamilán, and Carlos González as Frígilis.

What makes this one stand out is the act of retelling. A novel from the 1880s is being rebuilt for a modern audience, with a new set of writers and a new point of view. Each of those choices, from the script to the casting, is a decision made by a specific person. Once a film reaches a screen, all of those choices are already baked in.

Netflix is one of the streaming services that often pick up original stories and make them for its own platform, rather than selling them to cinemas first. Filming marks the point where the plan turns into a shoot. Anyone following the film from here will be watching for the next announcements, which typically include a release window and more about the production team.
