Penicuik Athletic and Clyde will not play their Scottish Cup second-round tie on Friday night. Heavy rain led to the match being postponed, and it has been provisionally moved to Saturday, 31 October, at 3pm.

The Scottish Cup is the country's oldest knockout competition, and every tie is a single game. Lose and you are out, so a postponement like this one matters to both clubs. The original plan was for the match to be played at Montgomery Park, Penicuik's ground, with a 7.30pm kick-off. It was also set to be shown live on BBC digital platforms.

Penicuik had tried to save the fixture. The club arranged a pitch inspection for 1pm on Friday, and it blamed the heavy rain on Storm Austen. A pitch inspection is a check by officials to decide whether the surface is safe to play on. In the end, the tie did not go ahead.

Clyde also confirmed the postponement on their official website. The club had posted matchday information the day before, so supporters had already been planning their evening. Now they will have to wait another week to see the game.

The weekend is busy beyond this one tie. The Scottish Professional Football League, which runs the country's professional divisions below the top flight, has 14 fixtures on Saturday. Another 19 second-round Scottish Cup ties are also scheduled for that day. The Scottish Premiership, the top division, has two games on Sunday.

For Penicuik and Clyde, the rearranged date brings its own questions. The match is only provisional, so the final date could still change if the weather turns again. Both clubs will be hoping the pitch holds up next time.

The Scottish Cup has a long tradition of giving smaller clubs a shot at bigger names, and moments like this can decide whole seasons. Ninety minutes on a wet Saturday can still be a big occasion for a small club. Either way, the tie is back on, and both squads will need to be ready.
