Amanda Seyfried says she turned down the role of Gamora in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and she does not take that decision back. She made the comments in a Q&A with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the charitable arm of the actors' union, as reported by Deadline on 25 October 2026.

The part went to Zoe Saldaña. She played Gamora opposite Chris Pratt's Star-Lord in the first Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, in Vol. 2 in 2017, in Vol. 3 in 2023 and in the 2022 holiday special. She also played the character in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Seyfried's reasons were partly practical. She said she did not want to spend long hours in the makeup trailer, that she cannot sit still for long, and that she dislikes stunts and heights. She also said she did not want to spend her working days pretending to inhabit an entire fictional world. The biggest reason, she said, was personal. She turned the role down for herself and for the family she knew she wanted to have.

She also doubted the film would succeed. She said she expected it would not be a hit, pointing to a talking tree and a raccoon in space, and she feared that a bad film could ruin her career. She now says she was wrong about its prospects. Her decision, she says, still stands.

Her view of the film's chances has shifted before. In a March 2025 interview with Variety, she said she was certain the film would be Marvel's first box office flop. The films went on to become a large part of the studio's catalogue.

Casting for a big franchise is rarely a single yes or no. Actors weigh schedules, the daily demands of a role and what they want their lives to look like. Those private calculations, made long before a film reaches cinemas, shape which faces audiences end up seeing on screen.
