MGM+ has greenlit "The Black Tapes", a horror investigation series, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is set to lead it. "Greenlit" means the streaming service has approved the show to go into production.

According to Variety, published on 26 October 2026, Coster-Waldau will play Dr. Richard Strand. He is attached to the lead role, meaning he has agreed to star.

The series will run for eight episodes. Filming is due to begin in Vancouver in January. MGM+ Studios is producing the show.

The story comes from a podcast of the same name. It was created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae and first released in 2015. The podcast has had more than 60 million downloads, according to the same report. Miles and Bae will write the series and serve as executive producers alongside Kearie Peak, John Rogers and Jennifer Court.

The show is aimed at a wide set of viewers. MGM+ plans to offer it in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Latin America.

Coster-Waldau is best known to many viewers as Jamie Lannister in "Game of Thrones", the fantasy drama that ran for eight seasons. He earned two Emmy nominations for that show, the television industry's top awards.

For the people behind the scenes, a greenlight is the point where planning turns into real work. Vancouver's crews, writers and production staff will now start preparing for a January shoot. Miles and Bae move from podcast creators to television writers, adapting a story that already has a large audience.

No broadcast date has been announced. Until one is, the series is simply approved, cast at the top and due to start filming early next year.
