Amy Madigan has joined Viola Davis and Sam Heughan in the cast of Ascent, a thriller series for Paramount+, according to Deadline, published on 26 October 2026.

Madigan will play Rachel, a former executive at Ascent Ventures, the fictional company at the centre of the story. Rachel is a lifelong mentor to Catriona, the character Davis plays. Catriona is an elite corporate fixer, a person hired to make big companies' troubles disappear, working in a world of global corporate crisis and damage control.

The series follows Catriona as she turns her ruthless professional skills against the very people she works for when her estranged daughter is in danger. Heughan plays Conal, one of Ascent Ventures' top agents. Agents in this setting are the company's operatives, the people who carry out its most sensitive work.

Ascent comes from John Logan and Paramount Television Studios, which produces it. Michael Aguilar, Viola Davis and Julius Tennon are executive producers alongside the showrunner, the lead writer who runs the show day to day. Davis and Tennon are producing through JuVee Productions. An executive producer is a senior figure who oversees a series from above the production line, rather than working on set.

Production is slated for next year in Los Angeles. That means the cast and crew will be working in one city, with the Los Angeles shoot set to begin after the new year. Casting news like this tends to come early in a project's life, well before filming starts.

Madigan has a busy slate beyond Ascent. She won her first Oscar earlier this year for playing Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger's Weapons. She is also set to star opposite Jason Segel and John C. Reilly in James Ponsoldt's thriller Sponsor, an Apple project. She has been cast in Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot, which Hulu has picked up to series. Her other recent castings include the Amblin/Netflix limited series All the Sinners Bleed, meaning a show with a fixed number of episodes and no planned second season, and Sony's baseball film The Comebacker, starring Tom Hanks.

Madigan is represented by Paradigm and Anonymous Content, the talent agencies that handle her work.

For viewers, the news is simple. A new Paramount+ thriller now has a second major name attached to its lead cast, and its filming is set for Los Angeles next year. No premiere date has been announced.
