Janus Films has acquired the North American and UK/Ireland rights to Alfonso Cuarón's Y Tu Mamá También, and a new 4K print will reach cinemas in summer 2027. Deadline reported the deal on 26 October 2026.

The restored version is timed to the 25th anniversary of the film's premiere. A 4K restoration is a high-resolution clean-up of the original picture, so older films can look sharp on modern cinema screens. "North America" means the United States and Canada.

The deal was negotiated between Janus and WME, the talent agency, on behalf of the filmmakers.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2001, where it won the Best Screenplay Award. Venice is one of the oldest and most watched film festivals, and a prize there often helps a title find buyers and distributors. This one went on to a strong awards run.

It was nominated for the Oscar for Best Screenplay. It also earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, and two BAFTA nominations, for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Not in the English Language.

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna play Mexico City teenagers who set off on a road trip with an older Spanish woman, played by Maribel Verdú. The cinematography was by Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, who went on to win Oscars of his own for other films.

For a film that is now a quarter of a century old, a new theatrical run is a chance for people who missed it first time to see it on a big screen. The summer 2027 date gives the 4K print a clear launch window, and Janus has the rights to put it in front of audiences across two English-speaking markets and the UK and Ireland.
