Amazon has announced the Echo Studio with Home Camera, a premium smart speaker with a built-in camera. According to The Verge, the camera can monitor a room while the owner is away and can be used to show things to Alexa. The device costs $249.99 and comes in graphite. Amazon will continue to sell the standard Echo Studio at $219.99, so the camera variant is a $30 step up within the same speaker body.

The camera also extends to the living room screen. The Echo Studio with Home Camera will support video calls on Fire TV devices, so the speaker's lens can act as a call endpoint for the television as well as a room monitor. Two features handle audio. Advanced Room Adaptation continuously tunes sound to the space, and Adaptive Volume raises or lowers output depending on where the user is standing or sitting in the room.

The announcement also covers a refreshed Echo Dot. Amazon updated it with a custom-designed AZ3 chip and a fourth microphone. It includes a built-in smart home hub supporting Zigbee, Matter, and Thread, the wireless protocols many sensors and lights use. That removes the need for a separate bridge for many of those devices. A built-in Eero Wi-Fi extender adds coverage of up to 1,000 square feet. The updated Echo Dot costs $99.99 and is offered in graphite, glacier white, agave green, and coral pink.

Several of these pieces trace back to the September 2025 device refresh. In a post on its news site, Amazon said the Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio were built for Alexa+, and that the new Echo devices use custom-designed silicon and an Omnisense sensor fusion platform, which combines readings from several sensors, to enable more personalized and proactive Alexa+ experiences. Reuters reported at the time that Amazon unveiled AI-infused Alexa+ alongside the new devices, and that Ring and Blink received high-end security cameras and Fire TVs received higher-resolution screens. The Echo Studio with Home Camera is the latest product to build on that hardware and software foundation.

Amazon's indoor camera line is part of the same picture. The Indoor Cam 2K can rotate 360 degrees and tilt 175 degrees. It has 8GB of storage, supports Alexa+, and uses Wi-Fi 6, according to Engadget's roundup of October 2026 announcements.

The timing sits within a busier month for the company's devices group. Amazon announced its first tablet computers in October 2026. Reuters reported on October 9 that Amazon confirmed a shake-up in its Alexa leadership a day after the tablet announcement.

In my view, the more interesting question for this category is where the camera sits in the home. A lens in a living room, paired with a speaker that tunes itself to the room and a hub that speaks Matter and Thread, moves the smart speaker closer to being a home gateway with eyes. The broader context here is that the value of such a device depends on what Alexa+ does with what the camera and microphones sense, and on how clearly owners can control that data. Those details will matter more to buyers than the price difference between the two Echo Studio models.

For readers who follow the category closely, the most useful takeaway is architectural. Amazon is putting the smart home radio stack, a Wi-Fi mesh extender, a camera, and an AI assistant into a single mains-powered chassis, rather than selling them as separate products. Whether that consolidation holds up in daily use will depend on the software, device availability, and how the features perform once they reach customers' homes.
