Most PlayStation Games Need PS Plus to Play Online, but Many Free Ones Don't

Most PlayStation games bought on disc or downloaded from the PlayStation Store need a PlayStation Plus membership to play online. That is the rule set out on PlayStation's own PS Plus page.
PlayStation Plus is PlayStation's paid subscription. A membership lets a player take part in online multiplayer on PlayStation consoles, and it is the piece that many paid games rely on for their online modes. Without it, a player can still play most of those games alone, but the shared online play is locked.
Free-to-play games are different. According to the same page, most of them do not require a PlayStation Plus membership. The page names Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples. Free-to-play means a game can be downloaded and played without paying to start, with the studio earning money through optional purchases inside the game.
For players, the practical question is simple. Before buying a paid game for online play, check whether it needs a membership. Free-to-play titles on the list above can be played online without one.
The split matters because it shapes what a player pays to play together. A household with several PlayStation consoles, or friends spread across different games, may find the membership cost adds up quickly. Players who mainly play free titles may never need the subscription at all.
Players who want current prices should check the PlayStation Store or the PS Plus page directly, since subscription terms can change.
