A localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine took effect in and around the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky at 4:00am Moscow time on October 27, 2026, according to an announcement posted by First Lady Melania Trump on X. A ceasefire is a temporary halt in fighting. The start date had been set for October 29, but the timing was accelerated by two days to protect civilian safety and speed the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid, the announcement said.

General Valery Gerasimov of the Russian Armed Forces confirmed that the ceasefire had begun. On Tuesday, October 28, Melania Trump said the arrangement had been expanded beyond Oleshky to other areas of the Kherson Region, so that humanitarian convoys could travel safely, according to Reuters.

Oleshky sits on the Dnipro River directly across from Kherson. Roughly 24,000 people lived there before the war. After the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed, about 90 percent of the town's territory was flooded. An estimated 1,700 to 2,000 residents remain, mostly older people, along with about 50 children. There has been no formal population count in Oleshky since 2022. NBC News described the town as Russian-occupied and called the agreement a rare humanitarian ceasefire.

The terms were laid out in a White House statement issued on October 23. Under them, Russia and Ukraine agreed to stop military action in Oleshky for a period, allowing aid to enter and a civilian evacuation to be prepared through a designated safe passage. Non-military civilian leaders from both countries would visit residents in their homes to work out what help they need. Residents who want to leave would receive coordinated support and transport to the destination of their choice.

The White House also said an American media organization regarded as impartial would accompany the Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground and document the work. It described the situation in Oleshky as dire and the city as a front-line war zone. CNN reported that the pause was intended to allow elderly residents to be evacuated and urgently needed aid to be brought in.

Melania Trump acted in her formal role as Exclusive Intermediary, a title the White House used for her position as a go-between, to bring Moscow and Kyiv into line on the agreement's goals, technical steps, timing and terms.
