Blizzard is selling a haunted seaside look for World of Warcraft player homes, and some fans say it breaks an earlier promise. The Grimtide Estate and Grimtide decor packs are housing cosmetics, which means decorative items for the player-owned houses in the game. They can be bought from the Battle.net store or the in-game shop.

According to Eurogamer, the packs are a Halloween-themed, spookier version of Kul Tiran-style furniture, with a nautical look. The Kul Tiran subfaction was added for Alliance players in the Battle for Azeroth expansion, so the furniture style is tied to one part of the game's world. Blizzard's own announcement presents the estate as a way to bring the spirit of the sea home.

The criticism centres on a developer promise. In a 2025 developer blog, Blizzard said housing items tied to the core fantasy of a player's race or class, or items that already exist in Azeroth, would not be sold in the shop. The same post said thematically important decor that players know and love would not appear there. Fans argue that the Grimtide packs appear to go against that pledge.

The game has also changed its shop in recent years. Blizzard added a premium currency to World of Warcraft after 21 years without one, a move PC Gamer covered when it was announced.

The debate comes down to a line. On one side is seasonal decor for a holiday. On the other are items that carry a race's or faction's identity, or decor players already know from the game's world. Where that line sits is the question fans are now asking.
