Flávio Bolsonaro Lands in Miami After Brazil Election Loss

Flávio Bolsonaro, a Brazilian senator who lost the country's October 2026 presidential election, arrived in Miami on Wednesday with his wife and two daughters, according to The New York Times. His arrival in the United States came three days after the runoff, the second round of voting between the two leading candidates, in which he was defeated by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Brazil's electoral court declared Lula the winner. According to Reuters, Lula received 64,256,232 votes to Bolsonaro's 59,826,041, a margin of more than 4 million. Lula won a fourth term as president. Bolsonaro had led the first round of voting.
The Times said he crossed from Brazil into Argentina by land, travelling with his wife and two daughters. Argentine officials reported that he had crossed into Argentina, while Brazilian officials said they have no record of him crossing.
From Argentina, he flew aboard a private jet via Ecuador to the United States, according to Reuters. Bolsonaro has denied that he fled Brazil after landing in Miami, the BBC reported.
The Times, in a separate article on the subject, described Miami as a common destination for political figures from Latin America who leave their home countries. It pointed to the city's Hispanic majority, its news media reach and its air links to the region as factors in that role.
