Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain drew 1-1 in the Women's Champions League, and it was a late moment that decided how the game felt. Khadija "Bunny" Shaw won City the lead with an 85th-minute penalty. Three minutes later PSG were level, through substitute Tara Elimbi Gilbert, who scored from close range.

The result was another draw for City, their third in a row in the competition. They are still waiting for their first European win of the season. Manager Andrée Jeglertz will want that win soon. Before kick-off, City sat 11th in the table, one place above the final qualifying spot. The competition's league phase is a single table in which every club plays a set group of opponents, so each match carries weight for the teams still chasing a place in the knockout rounds.

The match was played at Joie Stadium. PSG went with goalkeeper Oliwia Peda between the posts. For City, there was a familiar name on the other side. Jennifer Echegini, who had been a deadline-day transfer target for City in September, lined up for Paris. Deadline day is the last day of the transfer window, when clubs make many of their final signings.

PSG come into the fixture in good shape at home. They sit second in the French top flight, three points behind leaders OL Lyonnes. Their qualities showed in the way they answered City's goal so quickly, with a reply that came from the bench.

City's earlier European run has been tough. They drew away at Bayern Munich and at home to Real Madrid before this game. Those are two of the strongest sides on the continent, and a point at the Etihad end of the calendar is not a bad return. A point against PSG is also something to build from, though City's supporters will feel the lost ground more keenly than most.

For a neutral watcher, the match offered a clear lesson in how quickly a football game can turn. A penalty can send a stadium up, and three minutes later the mood can change again. Shaw's goal and Gilbert's reply will both get replayed, and for both sets of fans they are the moments that will stick.

City now have a few days to regroup before their next European assignment. Their league table position will depend on what they can do with the points they still have to chase.
