Fans should not expect a new Destiny announcement at this year's The Game Awards, Bungie has said. Josh Deane, the studio's head of product, made the point in a warning issued on 29 October 2026, according to GameSpot.

The studio is instead working on older material. Bungie says it is bringing vaulted content back into Destiny 2. Vaulted content means material that was taken out of the game and stored away, so players can no longer reach it. The list includes the Red War and Forsaken story campaigns.

Bungie says it received an initial greenlight in June to begin scoping the work. Scoping is the early step of measuring how big a job is before the team commits to the full effort. A studio that has not yet been named will help with the revival, according to Bungie's community update.

The timeline has two stages. The first is a pre-production phase, which Bungie describes as a proof-of-work stage. In this phase, the team tests whether the approach can work before it starts building. Bungie expects that stage to run until roughly January or February. Full production would then follow for about 12 months, to finish the process of porting, or moving, the old content into the current game.

For players who have been waiting for those campaigns, the schedule means a long wait. Even if the early stage goes to plan, the stated timeline puts the finished work roughly a year after the proof-of-work phase ends.

The Game Awards is one of the largest yearly events for games, where studios often reveal new projects. Bungie's message is that its next update on this work will come on its own schedule, not at the ceremony.
