Borderlands Franchise Passes 100 Million Copies Sold

The Borderlands series has sold more than 100 million copies across all of its games. Developer Gearbox Software announced the milestone in a blog post, which Eurogamer reported on 2 November 2026.
The series is a shooter with a loot-driven twist. Players hunt for weapons with random stats, and that loot keeps them coming back. The franchise has now reached the total that its developer had been tracking toward for some time.
Before Borderlands 4 launched, the series stood at 94 million copies sold. In August 2025, GameSpot reported that Gearbox chief executive Randy Pitchford had predicted the new game would sell at least 6 million copies, enough to carry the franchise past 100 million. The 100 million figure now stands as the company's own count.
Gearbox has also finished the Year One roadmap for Borderlands 4. That roadmap is the schedule of new content the studio planned for the game's first year on sale. It included two new playable characters and two Story Packs, which are story-focused add-on campaigns that extend the game beyond its original release.
Gearbox is not stopping there. The studio says it is developing more Borderlands 4 content for next year. No release dates or details for that content were given in the company's blog post.
For players, the news means two things. The series has a large and established audience, and the current game is still getting new material. Anyone who has been waiting to see what comes after the Year One plan now knows that more work is underway, and that the studio expects to share it in 2027.
