Waze Rolls Out Five AI Features: What Each Does and Who Gets Them

Waze is deploying five new AI-driven features to its navigation app, according to Engadget. The features include motorcycle-specific routing, personalized route suggestions based on your driving history, a quieter "Less Chatty" voice mode, an upgraded reporting tool that works by voice, and Gemini-powered voice search that understands natural language.
Motorcycle Mode: A Hybrid Approach
Motorcycle mode routes riders around hazards that affect two-wheeled vehicles but not cars — potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, shoulder endings, and narrow bridges — and finds shortcuts unavailable to four-wheeled traffic. The feature combines Waze's real-time traffic data with a dedicated team of human editors who focus specifically on motorcycle hazards. This hybrid approach — AI for pattern detection and route planning, humans for verifying that hazard reports are accurate — keeps the motorcycle layer of the map reliable in a way that pure crowdsourcing or pure automated systems alone might not achieve.
The rollout is limited to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines. This geographic list tracks closely with regions where motorcycles and scooters make up a large share of daily commuting and delivery traffic, unlike North America or Western Europe. Waze has not indicated whether the feature will expand to other markets.
Personalized Routes and Less Chatty Mode
The personalized routes feature layers your own historical driving data on top of Waze's standard traffic-optimized routing, surfacing suggestions based on routes you have taken before rather than purely on live congestion. Users can disable this feature if they prefer standard routing — a control that has become standard for AI-based recommendations that learn from your behavior.
Less Chatty mode reduces voice guidance to only what matters: turn-by-turn instructions and safety warnings. It strips out the ambient commentary Waze has historically added alongside basic navigation directions.
Conversational Reporting Expands
Conversational Reporting began as a test in October 2024 and let drivers report hazards or traffic by speaking naturally rather than tapping through menus. The expanded version now lets you flag stale or incorrect map data by voice while driving — effectively turning the same voice interface into a crowdsourced map-editing channel, per Google's blog.
Gemini Voice Search: Limited Beta for Now
Gemini-powered voice search lets you ask natural-language queries — for example, "Find me a gas station nearby with the lowest prices" — and returns a customized results page rather than a simple list of stations ranked by distance. This feature is currently limited to Waze's beta community and rolling out globally within that tier, not to the general release version yet.
The personalization features, Less Chatty mode, and expanded Conversational Reporting are rolling out globally on both Android and iOS.
How Google Is Packaging These Releases
Notably, Google and Waze did not announce all five features as a single coordinated release. Engadget cites only an October 2024 Google blog post introducing Conversational Reporting in its original form. Waze's blog currently features a post titled "New road reporting features coming to Waze," which mentions Conversational Reporting alongside unrelated posts about crash alerts and branded driving experiences. There is no unified announcement covering the entire batch.
This matters if you are tracking how Google rolls out AI features across its products. Bundling five separate features — some in limited regional beta, one in general global release, one in beta-only global rollout — into a single media narrative works well for headlines but makes it harder to find a clear, versioned record of what changed and when. The strategy behind motorcycle mode is also instructive.
