Northamptonshire have signed wicketkeeper-batter Finlay Bean from Yorkshire on a three-year deal. The 24-year-old came through Yorkshire's academy, the club's youth pathway, and now moves to the Northampton county side.

A wicketkeeper-batter is a player who stands behind the stumps to take deliveries that are not hit, and who also bats in the team's top order. Bean has done plenty of the second part. He has scored 2,649 runs in 48 first-class matches for Yorkshire, which are the longer, multi-day games. In the 50-over format known as List A, he has added 517 runs in 30 matches.

His rise was quick. He made his Yorkshire first-team debut in 2022, after scoring 441 runs for the second XI, the club's reserve side, to break that team's record. BBC Sport reported earlier this year that he had scored six centuries in his first 43 first-class games, including an innings of 224 against Nottinghamshire in June. He also set Yorkshire's club record for the fastest List A hundred, scored at Scarborough in the Metro Bank One Day Cup. He usually opens the batting, which means he walks out first and faces the opening balls of an innings.

Northamptonshire's head coach, Darren Lehmann, said the club had been watching Bean for some time. BBC Sport carried the news of the signing on 3 November 2026. Lehmann's comments were brief, and the club has not said more about how Bean will fit into its plans for the coming seasons.

Bean's playing time at Yorkshire tailed off in the most recent campaign. He featured in the One-Day Cup in the latter stages of last season. His last County Championship appearance came in May, and he finished his red-ball season in the second XI.

For a player moving to a new county, that makes this a fresh start. Bean now has a three-year contract at Northamptonshire and a chance to show again what he did at the top of Yorkshire's order.
