Poland Deploys Extra Police to Border With Russia's Kaliningrad

Poland has moved police units to its border with Russia's Kaliningrad exclave, a Russian territory cut off from the rest of the country, because of the threat of an armed incursion by Moscow. Hromadske reported that the reinforcement included additional police and counterterrorism units.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland had thwarted a possible provocation on the Kaliningrad border overnight. He also described "disturbing movement" in Kaliningrad, according to The New York Times.
According to Bloomberg, Poland's security forces intervened after detecting suspicious activity near the border. Hromadske reported that the reinforcement followed intelligence warnings of possible sabotage.
The border has been a focus of concern for some time. In September 2026, Reuters reported that Poland expected Russia would target its border crossings with Ukraine as Moscow carried out strikes. Separately, in November 2022, Poland's defence minister said the country would build a razor-wire fence along its border with Kaliningrad, according to Reuters.
Kaliningrad sits on the Baltic Sea between Poland and Lithuania, and its position has long made it a point of sensitivity for NATO members in the region. Poland is a NATO member, and the events of November 3 are the most recent sign of how closely Warsaw is watching the area.
