The East Village home and studio of the Dutch American artist Anton van Dalen is for sale, with an asking price of US$6.95 million, 6sqft reported. An asking price is what the seller hopes to receive. It is not a sale price, and no sale has been reported.

The house, known to friends and neighbours as the "Peace House," sits at 166 Avenue A in Manhattan, New York. The New York Times reported that the listing came two years after van Dalen's death in 2024. The Sotheby's Realty post on Facebook described it as the longtime home and studio of the artist. Sotheby's Realty is the property arm of the auction house Sotheby's.

The listing on Compass, a real estate brokerage, gives the property five bedrooms and four bathrooms. It is listed as a multi-family home, which means it is set up for more than one household to live in.

Van Dalen spent his career painting and drawing the streets around him. He chronicled the East Village, and his work followed the changing character of the Lower East Side, the neighbourhood on Manhattan's east side where he lived. He was born in the Netherlands and made his life in New York.

His interest in birds is also well documented. Artnet News wrote about the pigeon coop he kept at the East Village home and studio, and about his P.P.O.W. gallery show titled "Doves: Where They Live and Work." The gallery is P.P.O.W., in New York.

Those birds also found their way into the art market. In 2017, van Dalen brought a pigeon coop artwork to the Frieze art fair, where galleries sell work to visitors. Artnet News reported the price as US$125,000, with the pigeons not included.

Van Dalen's home is now on the market, and the listing is the first public step in whatever happens to the property next.
