Wendy Webb's Haunted Lakeside Town Heads Toward TV in The Invited

A supernatural mystery thriller called The Invited is in development for television. Impossible Dream Entertainment, the production company behind Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, is working on it with the UK company Wall to Wall, according to Deadline, which reported the news on 3 November 2026.
Development is the early stage of making a show. Writers shape the story, and the team builds the plan before anyone commits to filming a series. Wall to Wall says it has been supplying programmes around the world since 1987, according to its website.
The series is inspired by the ghost story novels of American author Wendy Webb, who was born in Minnesota. Her books are set in Wharton, a fictional old town on a lake, where the past never quite stays put. The Invited is not based on a single book. It will pull Webb's stories into one connected haunted world that grows from season to season.
The first season will adapt The End of Temperance Dare, one of Webb's novels. Her most recent book, The Witches of Santo Stefano, came out in 2024. Earlier titles include The Stroke of Winter, Daughters of the Lake, The Haunting of Brynn Wilder and The Tale of Halcyon Crane.
Writing the adaptation falls to Helen Black, working with Jeff Howard. Black wrote the drama Life and Death in the Warehouse, which was nominated for a BAFTA and an International Emmy. Howard has worked with the director Mike Flanagan on The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and Gerald's Game.
The rights came through Shaun Redick, who partnered with his wife, Yvette Yates Redick, to secure the rights to Webb's novels. That deal is what allows the project to exist at all, and it is the reason Webb's back catalogue can now be spread across many episodes and seasons.
For readers who know Webb's books, the appeal is the setting. For everyone else, the pitch is simple: a lake town, a mystery, and a ghost story stretched across a whole series. Nothing has been confirmed about where or when The Invited will air.
