Gears of War Movie Script Is Complete, Says David Leitch

A version of the script for Netflix's Gears of War movie is now complete, according to director David Leitch. He confirmed it in an interview with ScreenRant, published on 2 November 2026. The conversation took place during an interview for his film How to Rob a Bank.

Netflix acquired the rights to Gears of War, the military shooter game series made by The Coalition, in late 2022. At the time, the streaming service said it planned both a film and an animated series. The movie will be live-action, meaning it will use real actors rather than animation.

The writing started in early 2023, when Jon Spaihts was brought on to write the screenplay. In May 2025, Leitch was tapped to direct the film. A script is the written blueprint for a movie, covering dialogue, scenes and action, so a finished version is a key step before filming can begin.

Leitch said that everybody is excited about the potential of Gears of War as a film universe. He added that he hopes it comes to fruition soon. In April 2026, he had also said Netflix was "100%" behind the script while it was still in progress.

For fans of the games, the news is a sign that the project is moving forward. A complete draft does not on its own set a release date, and none has been given. Netflix's next public steps on the film have not yet been announced.
