Nicolas Cage is set to star in The Brand, a true-crime film about organised crime inside America's prison system, according to Deadline, which reported the casting on 4 November 2026.

Cage plays Carter Briggs, leader of the dominant white prison gang at San Quentin, the California state prison. Alexander Ludwig plays Taylor Hartman, a young lifer whom Briggs takes under his wing. Maria Bakalova plays Lilly, the woman Hartman loves. Gabriel Basso is also in the cast.

The film is based on an investigative article by David Grann. It ran in The New Yorker in February 2004, when Grann was a staff writer at the magazine. Its subject was the Aryan Brotherhood, which the magazine calls a murderous prison gang built on white supremacy that grew into a covert empire. The group is also known as "the Brand," the name the film takes. According to the magazine's summary, Gregory Jessner moved to dismantle the group, which The New Yorker covered in detail.

Vincent Grashaw will direct from a screenplay by Alessandro Camon. The film is an Identity Media production in association with Gramercy Park Media.

The business side is moving too. Fortitude International has picked up international sales rights and will take the film to the American Film Market, the November trade event where distributors buy and sell rights to films, some of which are not yet made. WME Independent is representing the film's U.S. rights, meaning the right to release it in American cinemas and on home screens in the United States and Canada.

Pre-production is slated to begin early next year, which means the cameras have not yet started rolling. Nothing about the cast or the sales deals has yet been shown on screen.

What stands out is how much of a film is settled long before shooting begins. Here, a true story from 2004 became a screenplay, a director was chosen, a cast was lined up, and sales agents began selling territories, all before a single scene was filmed. Each step is a decision made by a named person or company, and each one shapes what audiences eventually see.
