Sony Pictures Profit Jumps as Spider-Man Carries the Quarter

Sony Pictures Entertainment's sales rose 37% in its July-to-September quarter, to $3.23 billion, according to Variety's report on Sony's results. Its operating income, the profit left after day-to-day running costs, jumped 527% to $488 million. Both figures are compared with the same three months a year earlier.
Most of that lift came from the cinema side. Theatrical revenue, the money earned from ticket sales and from releasing films to cinemas, reached $1.28 billion. That was about eleven times the figure for the year-earlier period. The main reason was Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened wide in cinemas on July 31.
The film has taken in a great deal at the box office. Its opening weekend in the United States and Canada brought in $360 million, a record for those two countries, according to Reuters. Sony reports that the film has grossed $2.52 billion worldwide. That places it third on the all-time list, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. Tom Holland plays Peter Parker and Zendaya plays MJ.
Sony's film story has a longer timeline. In its November 2025 results remarks, the company said filming had begun and that the film was scheduled for release in the following fiscal year, which runs April to March. In May 2026 it said it planned to release the film as part of building and strengthening its franchises. Ahead of the opening, in its July 2026 results remarks, Sony said it was confident the film would be a hit.
Not every part of the business grew. The television production segment, which makes series for broadcasters and streaming services, brought in $483 million, down 45% on the year before. Behind a figure like that sit production crews, writers and editors, whose work depends on which series are ordered and when they are delivered.
Across the whole Sony Group, revenue for the quarter came to 3.429 trillion yen, about $21.5 billion, up 10%. Net income, the final profit after all costs and taxes, reached 450 billion yen, or $2.8 billion, up 44%. The dollar figures are conversions of the yen amounts.
