Pusha T Says Rap Lacks Originality and Individuality

Rapper Pusha T says the rap scene in 2026 has lost some of its originality. He made the point in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, published on 6 November 2026, in which he said artists too often copy what is already doing well.
"Now people try to do different versions of what's hot," he told the paper. He also said individuality, the sense that an artist sounds like nobody else, once defined hip-hop. The Billboard report on the interview puts his complaint in those terms.
The conversation also turned to rap battles, the public lyrical feuds in which rappers take direct shots at each other on record. Jay-Z recently told GQ that artists should avoid them now. He argued that stan culture, the intense devotion of some fans, and social media can blow these disputes far out of proportion. He pointed to the fallout between Drake and Kendrick Lamar as an example.
Pusha T disagreed. "As long as it's music, it's fine," he said, adding that anything beyond music goes too far. He has been on the other side of a high-profile rap clash with Drake himself, so the subject is not abstract for him.
He also described his working week. Pusha T said he and producer Pharrell often talk at 5:30 a.m., and they treat studio time like a job. Their sessions run as 12-hour shifts, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Pusha T released the single and video "Diet Coke" in 2022. The track was produced by Kanye West and 88-Keys.
The comments add to a long debate about how rap should sound and how artists should treat one another. Pusha T's view is that the music itself is where the argument belongs.
