Wayne Rooney has been named Pundit of the Year at the Broadcast Sport Awards, for his BBC coverage of the FIFA World Cup.

A pundit is a television expert who talks through the games, explaining what happened and why. The prize was presented at a ceremony in London, attended by 650 people from the sports television industry. Broadcast Sport said the category was sponsored by NetInsight.

Rooney's win is the latest step in a broadcasting career that began soon after his playing days. He played at three World Cups for England, and he made his debut as a full-time pundit on Match of the Day, the BBC's flagship football highlights show, in August 2025. The BBC reported both points in its coverage of the award.

The awards are the industry's chance to recognise work across sports television. The shortlist was revealed in late September, with winners chosen for categories that range from live commentary to documentaries. Rooney's name was among those in the running for the pundit prize.

For football fans, the award is a reminder that the job of talking about the game is a craft of its own. Good analysis helps people who have never kicked a ball understand a tactic, a substitution or a moment of bad luck. Pundits also have to be right in front of millions of viewers, every week, with no way to take a line back.

Rooney's honour is the sort of recognition that comes from years of showing up. Now he joins the list of winners for the year's best work in sports broadcasting.
