Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles. The chief of staff is the senior aide who runs the president's staff. Trump announced the appointment on Friday afternoon, November 6, via Truth Social, according to The Guardian.

Miller had been serving as Trump's deputy chief of staff. His earlier titles include deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser to the president. In the announcement, Trump described Miller as one of his most trusted advisers, according to his post on Truth Social.

The appointment came after the Republican Party's defeat in the midterm elections. Reuters reported that Miller takes the role as Trump prepares to deal with a House of Representatives now led by Democrats. The White House said Miller is the 33rd person to hold the post of chief of staff, according to a White House release.

Several Democratic leaders criticised the choice within hours. Senator Dick Durbin called Miller a hatemonger. Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, described Miller as a dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist and demanded that he be fired. California Governor Gavin Newsom said Miller was one of the most vile thugs ever to reach the Oval Office. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Trump could not have made a worse choice. Senator Chris Van Hollen called the decision another kick in the teeth to the American people.
