Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender began streaming on Paramount+ on July 25, capping a release path that shifted from a planned 2025 theatrical run to a streaming launch — with a limited cinema run added back in for Oscar qualification (Variety).

The film premiered the night before at San Diego Comic-Con, where it filled Hall H on July 23 (Paramount). It was the first feature from Avatar Studios, the production company co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko set up with Nickelodeon parent Paramount in 2021 after stepping away from Netflix's live-action Avatar remake (Variety).

Lauren Montgomery directs alongside Konietzko and DiMartino (Paramount). The voice cast is led by Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Dionne Quan as Toph, and Steven Yeun as Zuko. The road to release hit a major bump in April, when clips leaked on social media, followed by the full movie. A 26-year-old man was arrested in Singapore for illegally accessing a media server to obtain and distribute the film. Speaking at the Variety Studio presented by Google TV, Eric Nam urged fans to skip the leaked version and thanked those who waited for the official release (Variety).

One storyline fans will not see in the finished film: Katara pregnant with her and Aang's first child, Bumi. The creative team explored the idea but ultimately cut it. DiMartino said it felt too grown-up, jumping past the characters' maturation from their teenage years into their mid-20s. Konietzko added that the pregnancy created a strange connotation — he wanted the characters to start a family because they chose to, not because Katara needed to give birth to an airbender (Variety).

For the Avatar franchise, the pipeline is already filling. Avatar: Seven Havens, a second sequel series, is set to premiere on Paramount+ on October 9. Konietzko confirmed that multiple Avatar films are in development, with their fate hinging on how Avatar Aang performs.
