After eight seasons on Showtime, The Chi has aired its series finale, closing out a run that made it the longest-running Black ensemble drama in premium cable history. The show also ranks among the longest-running programmes in Showtime's history. Creator Lena Waithe spoke about the ending in an interview published by The Hollywood Reporter on 27 July 2026, the day of the finale. The show's official Instagram account posted a farewell video to fans on 24 July, saying: "This is the end of season 8. It's the final season."

The Chi premiered on Showtime on 18 January 2018, set on the South Side of Chicago. Waithe, who became the first Black woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing for her work on Netflix's Master of None, built the series as an ensemble drama about life, family and survival in a neighbourhood frequently reduced to headlines about violence. Spike Lee's 2015 film Chi-Raq, which focused on Chicago's gang violence, had been one recent cultural reference point for the city before The Chi offered a different, more sustained lens.

The show's run was not without turbulence. Jason Mitchell, who played Brandon Jackson, was fired after co-star Tiffany Boone raised allegations of inappropriate behaviour, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Brandon was killed off the series following Mitchell's departure. The show carried on, retooling its ensemble across subsequent seasons.

By the final season, Jacob Latimore sat at No. 1 on the call sheet — the top-billed position on a production — as Emmett. The core cast also included Birgundi Baker, Hannaha Hall, Michael V. Epps, Shamon Brown Jr., Luke James and Jason Weaver. Curtiss Cook played Douda; Cortez Smith played Nuck. Across its eight seasons, the show drew a wide roster of guest and recurring appearances: Common, Iman Shumpert, Cory Hardrict, Vic Mensa, Da Brat, Lil Rel Howery, Lynn Whitfield, Kandi Burruss, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Tabitha Brown, La La Anthony, Leon, Rotimi and Karrueche Tran all appeared at various points, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The road to the finale was paved with loss. Characters Alicia and Jada died in season 7, a story thread that carried into the final run, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter in August 2025.

Waithe marked the finale with an Instagram reel on 26 July, captioned "Big Season Finaleeee." In an earlier post from October 2025, she reflected on the show's origins: "When I created The Chi, it wasn't just about making a TV…" Reel Chicago, a local film and television industry publication, published a tribute to the series on 23 July.

What sits under the end of any long-running series is the crew and the writers' room behind it. The Chi sustained hundreds of jobs across eight seasons of production in and around Chicago. The finale closes that chapter.
