Asia's July 2026 Floods: A Continent Under Water

Extreme rainfall, flash floods, and typhoons have swept across Asia throughout July 2026, killing at least 75 people across Afghanistan and Bangladesh alone and leaving over a million stranded. The World Meteorological Organization has framed the disasters as part of a worsening continental pattern of climate-linked precipitation extremes — meaning rainfall events that are becoming more intense and more frequent as the climate warms.
In eastern Afghanistan, heavy rainfall on 20 July triggered flash floods that ultimately affected nine provinces, including Nuristan, Laghman, Parwan, Logar, and Kabul, according to ReliefWeb. The Guardian's 28 July roundup puts the death toll at at least 31, with hundreds missing. Earlier UN reporting had tracked lower figures as the situation evolved: UN OCHA's Flash Update #1 on 21 July confirmed 23 dead and 15 injured; UN News reported at least 26 killed on 22 July, including three Afghan refugees who died at a returnee transit camp. UNICEF's Flash Update #1, dated 23 July, reported 125 injuries and identified Parun as the most severely impacted area. A WHO Situation Report No. 2, published 27 July, confirmed the floods had impacted eastern, southeastern, and central regions between 20 and 25 July. Around 80 people were injured, according to ReliefWeb.
On the ground in Dur Baba district, the human cost is visceral. Anar Gul, a construction worker, reported non-stop rain for ten days and ten nights. His kitchen collapsed. His neighbour, Sayed Afsar Sadat, saw a large part of his house destroyed. Houses in the village are built from stone and mud, leaving them acutely vulnerable to sustained downpour. Sadat told the Guardian that rains are "coming heavier and earlier each year," destroying roads and washing away crops.
Bangladesh faced its own catastrophe earlier in the month. Reuters reported on 11 July that floods and landslides in the southeast killed at least 44 and stranded over a million. Chattogram, on the south-eastern coast, received a record 412.3mm of rainfall in 24 hours in early July, triggering a flash flood that swept through the Banshkhali district. Jesmin Akter, a Banshkhali resident, lost her poultry and paddy field; her house collapsed and all belongings were ruined. She carried her six children through chest-deep water to her mother's house, where they stayed in crowded conditions for over a week. The family is now surviving on food assistance from different organisations. Her daughter has developed a fever amid unsanitary conditions.
The disasters spanned the continent. India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan all experienced erratic, sudden heavy monsoon rains — the seasonal weather system that brings most of South Asia's annual rainfall, but with timing and intensity growing increasingly unpredictable. South Korea swung between heatwave and downpour. Japan and Vietnam saw torrential rain trigger landslides. China's Ministry of Water Resources reported in mid-July that more than 600 rivers had risen above warning levels, a 35% increase from the five-year average for the same period, and announced the start of a month-long peak flood control window. A large landslide hit the south-western city of Chongqing after torrential rain. Meanwhile, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration issued a land warning for Typhoon Bavi on 10 July, then cancelled its warning for Typhoon No. 202612 on 25 July. As of 28 July, CWA tracking data showed another typhoon at 13.2N 172.7E, moving WSW at 15 km/h with minimum pressure of 980 hPa.
The wider frame is sobering. The WMO has previously reported rainfall values above 1,700mm in parts of South and Southeast Asia. A separate WMO article documented more than 600 deaths from floods and storms across India, Pakistan, and Nepal in a single June-to-August period. The organisation's June 2025 outlook included a precipitation forecast for the same monsoon window now delivering these extremes.
The pattern is also geographically mirrored. While Asia drowned, wildfires raged simultaneously across Europe and North America in late July 2026, as the Guardian noted.
The broader context here is about what happens when extreme weather meets fragile infrastructure. In Afghanistan, mud-and-stone construction magnifies risk; in Bangladesh, low-lying coastal geography and farming-based livelihoods mean that flash floods cascade from immediate danger into prolonged displacement, food insecurity, and disease. China's 35% surge in rivers above warning levels points to a systemic strain on flood-control infrastructure that has no precedent in recent operational memory. The convergence of simultaneous typhoon activity, monsoon displacement, and continental-scale heatwaves places extraordinary pressure on national disaster management capacities at a time when international humanitarian funding for these regions is already stretched thin. For policymakers, the question is shifting from whether climate change contributes to these events to whether existing adaptation infrastructure, early-warning systems, and humanitarian response chains can scale at the pace the atmosphere now demands.
