Linda Perhacs, the folk singer-songwriter whose 1970 debut album Parallelograms later became a touchstone for generations of experimental and psychedelic folk musicians, has been reported missing by a group of friends and longtime collaborators. Perhacs is 82 years old. Pitchfork

The group — former manager Laurel Stearns, musician Julia Holter, and DubLab co-founder Mark "Frosty" McNeill — shared a statement online on 27 July asking for the public's help in locating her. Holter first raised the alert in an Instagram post, followed by a message on X: "legendary songwriter and dear friend and collaborator @LindaPerhacs is missing. Friends and longtime collaborators have been unable to reach her." Paste Magazine

Stearns and the group last heard from Perhacs roughly eight months ago. They last saw her at an assisted living facility in the San Fernando Valley, California, where she had been living for the past eight years. At some point after that, Perhacs was discharged from the facility under the supervision of her caregivers. Since then, neither Perhacs nor her legal guardians have responded to repeated attempts at contact. Pitchfork

Stearns, who managed Perhacs from 2013 to 2016 and worked on the release of her 2014 album The Soul of All Natural Things, confirmed to Pitchfork that she filed a missing persons report with the Los Angeles Police Department on 6 June. The LAPD investigated but could not relay Perhacs's status to Stearns or her friends, because they are not legally tied to Perhacs as family members or as caregivers holding power of attorney. Perhacs released her third and most recent album, I'm a Harmony, in 2017. The record featured collaborations with Holter, who has been among the most vocal figures calling attention to Perhacs's disappearance. For those unfamiliar with her work, Parallelograms sold poorly on its original 1970 release but was rediscovered decades later, earning Perhacs a devoted following among musicians and listeners drawn to its layered, acapella-inflected folk. She recorded no second album for 44 years, returning in 2014 with The Soul of All Natural Things and following it with I'm a Harmony three years later.
